Hi,
I know I promised to let the list know details of Hadcock's book as soon as it came out, but I have since unsubscribed since school's been keeping me busy. I checked the archives and didn't seem to find anything on the book. I want to let you all know about since I feel that it'll be an asset to anyone serious about the clarinet.
The Working Clarinetist came out on the 1st of October. You can find it on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and all the other sites. It consists of an editted copy of the rough manuscript that Hadcock gave to many of his student and some materials from his lectures, master classes, etc. It was compile by his widow, Aline Benoit, Bruce Ronkin, and Marshall Burlingame.
It is by far the most comprehensive book I've ever seen on playing the clarinet. The first half goes through all the important excerpts(music included) with tips on interpretation and how to learn these passages. He also spends time on difficult tutti passages as well as the solos. He has some wonderful ideas on fingering and note groupings, etc.
The second part deals with the different aspects of playing and how to improve them. There's even a section on repair, intonation. He also added to masterclasses on the Mozart Concerto and the Nielsen.
Two of the most valuable chapters are devoted to practicing and auditioning. He also includes a systematic way of learning difficult passages. The section on auditioning takes you through the process starting from the night before through after the audition.
The book ends with a compendium of fingerings. He gives explanations for each one and some context on where they can be used. All in all, it's an invaluable resource from a wonderful player and teacher. The two qualities that comes to mind are thoroughness and its practicality.
