Paulo Costa Lima, the Brazillian composer, has very generously made one
of his recent works available to us: "Obeji" for flute and clarinet. It won
first prize in the national composition competition in Brazil in 1995. Its
melodies are drawn from African themes and I think all of you will be
interested in listening to it. The first movement is well beyond my
technical
ability but I think I'll give the second and third a try. Here's some
background
on the title:

The Yoruba (of Nigeria) regard twins as possesing supernatural powers and
their birth is the cause of great rejoicing. As they also believe that
twins have
a combined, inseperable soul, the minute one twin dies, the life of the other
is immediately imperiled, because the balance of his soul (without which his
continued existence is impossible) has been seriously disturbed. To
counteract
this, an artisan is commissioned to carve a small wooden figure as a symbolic
substitute for the soul of the departed. Upon the death of both twins, two
figures
will be carved so as to commemorate their passing. These figures are called
ibeji (ibi=born, eji=two) and are supreme expressions of African folk art,
prized
for the beauty and intricacy of their carving as well as their decorations.

You can see images of Ibeji figures at
