Please don't attempt to drill the instrument yourself! Mr. Swiney is one
of the country's top repair technicians, and was merely explaining what
he would do. Try getting your local repair tech to fix it first, and if
that doesn't work, then ask Alvin Swiney to fix it. I remember being
really scared the first time my teacher reamed out a tonehole, but it
doesn't bother me when it's done by someone who knows what s/he's doing.
Whenever I start scraping on a mouthpiece, I always say, "Kids, don't
try this at home." I usually have to be the most adamant about saying
this in front of adults, who think that they can fix anything. I once
had an adult student take a circular sander to his mouthpiece. It became
quite a nice birdseed scoop when he was done.
