CBC 2 had the 1926 recording of Elgar conducting his own Enigma Variations (available via EMI) on this weekend. Striking recording. Somehow the clarinet recorded very well, especially the solo on the next to last (I believe) variation. Who was that person playing? Tone to die for.
I hear the Violin Concerto on the Elgar recordings with a 16 year old Yehudi Menuhin is another outstanding one of the series. Luckily I have this 25% off coupon for any CDs that's good at my local Harmony House Classical store ...
