Neil,

Sorry to take so long for the reply. I still have a couple hundred messages to
wade through. Just don't find the time so easily at the moment...

I gather from your comment "HUH?" that you have a problem with the quote.

If a (precocious) three year old really wants to learn to read (language or
music or whatever), he may manage. But otherwise, it's more sensible to teach a
child of that age by rote, just like with a language. In fact, it may be more
sensible to teach anybody by that method. I've been experimenting and find that
I go longer and longer with my beginners up to age 10 or so with no printed
music.
