Searching through the Internet, looking for the history of the basset
clarinet to answer a different question, I got sidetracked - as I love to
be - on some Web pages devoted to Mozart, where I recognized a few names,
one from this list. So, stopping to read a few of the messages, I came to a
discussion not about performance practices but audience practices during
Mozart's time.

Now, I know we've discussed it here, too. My question is more along the
lines of - are there any orchestras that still encourage the applause
between movements or after a particularly good solo? Do any help the
audience with a little history about this? I know _I'd_ travel a bit, even
to Grand Rapids (hint, hint) to learn and experience this sort of thing. The
audience would have to be encouraged to participate, but with the strategic
positioning of a few shills to break the silence (as necessary) it might
make for a delightful evening of participatory music.
