The trick I found is matching the correct reed to the mouthpiece.
I play 4's on both bass and soprano. My soprano mouthpiece is a
P34 from Gigliotti and my bass mpc is a Garrett mo version. I get
better response in the upper registers with the harder reeds. I
have found that Rico Royal ,VD and Legere 4 are fine for the bass
and VD and Legere 4 fine for the soprano. I used to play 3.5' s,
but the response was not there. This assumes the reeds are
balanced and not warped etc. I have run into boxes of reeds where
after a week, they were pitched and other boxes where they all
played. The last box of bass VD had 2 of the 5 reeds miscut and
luckily, the retailer replaced them, no questions asked.

A good test mught be to try a Legere on the mpc. If it doesn't
work, pitch the mpc.

my $.02
