I play bass a lot. Yes you do need a firmer reed to play a lot of the
repertoire, but the reed should NEVER feel like a board. Life is too short to
fight with your mpth/reed combo.

I probably shouldn't say this, but since I've been pounding the Vandoren
mouthpieces, I should be fair. The only reeds that I have ever found
acceptable for serious bass playing are the Vandorens. And yes I use 3 1/2's
same as I use on Bb and A.

Now Grand Concert has really great bass reeds too, but I've heard they're not
available many places yet. When the are, they will give Vandorens a run for
their money.

The choice of a good bass mouthpiece is very limited:
1. Clark Fobes
2. Charles Bay
3. Get your own Selmer C* and send it to Matson for re-facing
4. Roger Garrett

I went Fobes.........but each has it's own merit.

Roger is making some fine Bass mouthpieces. Try him for an excellent
quality/decent price alternative
