David - I looked in Weston "More Great Clarinet Virtuosi..." and found
the same dates you did, and the info about La Scala. Here is the entry.

Luigi Bassi (1833-71), Italian. Hans von B=FClow called him a "valentissimo=

artista." He was first clarinet at the Scala Theater, Milan, and is best
known as the composer of the popular "Rigoletto Fantasie." Quite early in
his career Bassi made an edition of Lefevre's tutor, which Ricordi
published. He also wrote a "Nocturne" and other Fantasies.
