OK...at the risk of being TOTALLY shameless, I'll respond.

Other than a nice ever facing, which is really NOT so difficult to achieve,
there are several things one can do to a mouthpiece to "enhance" tone,
responsiveness, etc.

Some mouthpiece techs really taper and smooth the baffle...the area right
behind the tip rail....others don't...some really narrow the side
rails.....etc.

Two things that I have found out recently that really help are these:

1. Up near the tip, really narrow the side rails. That last quarter inch.
REALLY, REALLY helps the clarity of the throat tones.

2. Tip rail.......very uniform....less than one mm, but not too thin...

3. The INTERIOR area, back of the windway, slanting back under the table of
the mouthpiece.....REALLY narrow and POLISH it....Boy does that smooth things
out.

Week ago last Sunday we played the Piston Symphony # 2. Long slow clarinet
solo in the second movement. Centers on throat "A" and "F#" .......

I used a mouthpiece, I made from a Babbit blank (183) and REALLY pushed that
blank to the ultimate.....got lots of nice comments on that solo...especially
from my wife who is my "best" critic.

Anyway, that's what I'm into right now. I'm working with Zinner blanks
too....but haven't had the "breakthru" yet.....They're quirky!

By the way.....you all know I went nasty about Vandoren B45's a week or so
ago...
Well, I came across a B45 with the 88 profile. It had a NASTY facing....

But, when I cleaned it up, re-faced it, and dis a few "voicing" things. The
mouthpiece really took off. I sold it on eBay...and the lady who bought it
says she is really happy with it.

End of bulletin!
