A "me too" comment. If you put a 5JB on a large-bore horn like the old
Centered Tone or probably the Leblanc Pete Fountain model, you will
sound like you've got a hidden microphone stuck in the instrument: the
power you can generate is unbelievable. For people who've not played on
a mouthpiece as open as the 5JB, you're in for a surprise in that you
may find the tone somewhat difficult to control at first. But it is
worth it.
Vandoren's B46 for the bass clarinet has the same little jazzman logo on
the side, which suggests that it's the huge-horn equivalent of the 5JB.
GREAT results with a 1.5 or 2 reed: you can bend and twist notes on that
thing in wonderful ways! Low notes to shake the windows:-).
Davern is a wonderful player with a much more traditional approach than
guys like Daniels or Peplowski.
Is Jimmy Giuffre still alive? Is he still active?
