Laroy Borchert quote the Harvard dictionary about the meaning of "rf" and I
thank him for it. The dictionary describes what the meaning is today, but
there is a big controversy about what the meaning of this symbol was in the
18th century. There is important evidence that the rf applied to a number
of notes following the first.

For example Mozart wrote some notes beginning with an "rf" and then several
notes later writes "p." So the argument arises if all the notes beginning
with the first up to (but not including the one with the "p") should also
have accents on them.

The problem with music dictionaries is that they do not give the meaning of
words in the various periods of music usage. And those meanings to change
with time
