Sometimes you can't guess ahead of time where your pitch on a given note
will be in relation to the prevailing pitch at that moment (it may require
one pitch to play the third in a woodwind chord with the second bassoon on
the bottom and another if you're entering a predominantly string texture,
for example). The ideal is to know your instrument and anticipate where it
will tend to be on any given pitch, but each time the context changes, so
may the needed adjustment. Be thankful the players you're complaining about
at least tune the note _after_ they've heard it.
