What ensemble doesn't have tuning problems - especially woodwind ensembles?
Even if you were to get two competent clarinet players playing matched
clarinets I doubt they'd be in tune over the whole range. More experienced
members may correct this, but I think that one of the reasons that military
bands and other large brass/wind ensembles used to use several Eb soprano
clarinets (perhaps they still do) was because they liked the "shimmerring"
effect which massed clarinets played slightly-out-of-tune produce. (If you've
ever owned or played an Eb sop clarinet, you'll realise how unlikely it is
that anyone except a super-professional could ever play it in tune even with
itself, let alone anyone else. The problems decrease with lowered pitch, but
not by much.
