How young to start clarinet?

The latest BBC music magazine has the following item, from an interview
with Rosalyn Fry:

Julian Bliss, born 1989, third of four children. The oldest plays
French Horn. Otherwise not a musical family.

Julian started playing clarinet at the age of FOUR, beginning with a
plastic Lyons C clarinet with fewer keys but authentic sound.
Studied with Paul Harris, Passed grade 8 at age of eight.
The examiner noted his remarkable virtuosity and music understanding.

TV appearances as a five and six year old got Julian an invitation to
play at Buckingham palace.
Decided to concentrate on classic repertoire
"I want to become one of the best solo performers in the world. I've got
to do a lot of practice, listen to other performers and get ideas."

Says teacher Paul Harris: "Julian can memorize a full-scale work in a
couple of days. He is a true prodigy yet with out any trace of
arrogance".

Learning a wide range of French repertoire and performing regularly in
the UK. Plays a program of French music including his favorite Messaien
"The Abyss of the Birds.'

Currently perfecting techniques 'I'm practicing tonguing and slurring."

Won the first round of the BBC Young Musicians 2000 but at age 10
considered too young for exposure.
"I never feel nervous when performing. I will enter again when I am
older and more experienced.
