I wonder how many kids who love and
need music get the door to the band room slammed in their faces just
because
they can't sing? I've heard so many anecdotes similar to Kevin's and
mine
that I think it happens a lot.

Lelia, no one in my schools gets the door slammed in their face,
although I do limit class size to max. 30 beginners, maybe max. 33 if
necessary, because because I can't teach anymore at the beginning when
everything is so hands on (yes I know we've had this discussion
recently). Your teacher, and Kevin's were wrong, and it's a good thing
you both persevered.

Your story in the last half is a wonderful one, and reminds me that
sometimes the time does comes when it would be better for all concerned
if certain children did not CONTINUE in the band. Before this ever
happens, I have a number of steps I go through to try and help the
child, sometimes at the expense of the other childrens' time in class.
I suggest private lessons, or help from a good high school player, or if
it's early enough in the year (which it usually isn't) switching to
another instrument.

In that way, I think I do as much as I can in a situation wherte my
options are limited. But I hate to give up on a child, because I've
seen even the worst of them turn themselves around and become fine
players. One I'm thinking of now was an extremely poor player in his
first year, and I remember thinking "that boy's never going to make it",
but he started practicing and began private lessons and this year
entered 1st year Music at the University of B.C.

Anyway, this whole subject has made me rethink the entire recruiting
process. I'm going to test only those who will, in fact, be in the band
program, and then I'll have a bit more time to do thoughtful testing.
By the way, what I've found true in the past is that kids who can't sing
well before they begin band often CAN after a year of band.

Cheers

Audrey
