Subj: [kl] Uncrappy But Cheap Ligatures (was Crappy mouthpieces)

David Blumberg suggested when trying mouthpieces:

<<<Just be sure that they use a non-scratching ligature also when trying the
M.P. - Rovner is great for that, as well as Gigliotti, Luyben, and many
other non-metal ligatures.>>>

I did this when trying out my Greg Smith (he sends you 3; you send 2 back).
Because I didn't want to buy 3 mouthpieces at $150 a shot, I used a Luyben
to try them. (Note--Greg Smith mouthpieces are worth *every penny* of the
price--but I can only play on one of them at a time!)

As it turns out, when the time came to play on the one I selected, I found
that the Luyben worked the best of all the ligatures in the drawer. Proves
once again that it's the *combination* of mouthpiece, reed & ligature that
requires attention.

Fortunately, Luybens are dirt-cheap (discount is what, six bucks?) Other
ligatures sell for ten or 15 times that much. Perhaps not the best use of
the money -- IMHO, of course.

If only Luyben made them for Eb or saxophones!
