should be able to produce student mouthpieces which are somewhat playable,
such as the Brilhart Eboline from the 70's. This isn't too much to ask.

Right you are, Christopher. Coincidentally as a bit of history, Arnold
Brilhart who played with the original Paul Whiteman band of the 20s and
30s and a studio musician, once said he was going to produce a good,
inexpensive mouthpiece so beginners could get a decent start and he did.
Although not the last word in mps, they were good enough to satisfy
Artie Shaw and later, Charlie Parker. And they're still in production
today.
