Walter,
I aggree with you on Gervase DePeyer. I grew up listening to his
recordings of the Rossini Intro, Theme, and var and the Spohr 1 concerto and
loved his sound and musical playing. I wish I could say the same thing now
a days. I heard him in Oklahoma about 5 years ago and his playing was
different. He still had technique but his sound has become very unfocused
in the extreme low and high registers - not how he sounded in the 60's. His
tone actually took away from what he was doing musically. He still is a
legend in the clarinet world but I think I like his playing better 30 years
ago.
