Audrey--you asked:

1) what do "cast" and "forged" actually mean?

This is how the keys are made. Forged keys are stamped into shape by a big
hydraulic hammer. Cast keys are molded from heated molten metal poured into
molds. Forged keys are "better" -- or at least that's what is used by every
artist-level instrument. Hold up better too, I think.

2) what about these tiny hands? It's long been a concern of mine when I
see
these tiny hands trying to finger the lowest g, f and e. Are some clarinets
cut with smaller holes? I thought the Artleys were, but Walter discourages
them as I noted someone on the list did a few months ago. Any comments?

It's not the size of the holes -- those won't be materially different.
(Perhaps smaller holes than the industry norm is one reason the Artleys are
so abysmally out of tune?). I just don't like the Selmer/Bundy keys because
they are not correctly shaped to fit the fingers -- they're just awkward
(others may disagree). Bundys are probably the most popular, and can get a
good sound. I just prefer the Buffets, Vitos and Yamahas.
