You are quite right about the Selmers, the majority of the players do pull
out about 1mm. We are tuning to 440, generally the temperature in most
houses are about 68 degrees, some colder. A minority of the Selmer students
play slightly flat but usually reminding them to support their tone helps.

I shall try the harder reed and the magazine trick with the Yamaha student.
