I'm getting ready to "step up" to a plastic clarinet (!) to
replace my metal clarinet (!) that I've been using to learn on.
I'm not really interested in having a wood clarinet as my only
"good" clarinet, because I am a doubler, and don't really have
the time or the patience to take proper care of a wood one
(though I would prefer a wood-like finish, because some people
won't hire you if they know you're using plastic). Anyway, I've
been considering four clarinets: the Yamaha, the Vito, and the
Amati, all sold by Woodwind and Brasswind
(http://www.wwandbw.com), and the Olds, sold by NEMC
(http://www.nemc.com). I'm sure most of you are familiar with
the Yamaha and the Vito, and would like to know what the
difference in sound is between these two. I also know that it is
very easy to find used Vitos, and that would be a consideration,
since I can do minor repairs myself. I have heard that the Olds
is a superior student instrument, though not well known, and the
Amati interests me because of its low price and European origin,
but I don't know if anyone here has ever seen one. Any thoughts?
