You are moving in the right direction. The Yamaha mouthpiece is quite
conservative, but a good mouthpiece. It is better than what the other makers put
with their student horns. A slightly harder reed will probably help some. If you
could play it in tune, then there is probably something wrong about how she is
playing it. How is her breath support? Roll up a magazine and check her tummy.
Is it hard when she plays?

Have you played on the other students' Selmers? I'm assuming they are student
line, plastic Selmers (Bundys). These instruments do tune sharper than Yamahas.
Don't pull them any more than 1 mm, and even then, such a pull should be filled
in with tuning rings.

What pitch standard are you using? Are you tuning to 440? What is the room
temperature? If it is higher than 72, let the pitch go to 441. If it is higher
than 74, let the pitch be 442.
