There will be a lot of opinions on this one.

A good plastic clarinet is better than a poor wooden one. I play on a plastic
Vito, which has served me well for lo these many years. I'm afraid to try a
professional model, for fear my sound will not improve. THEN what would I
blame? :)

Mostly, you have to make up your own mind. Do you have a private teacher?
Often, a private teacher will have strong opinions on this topic and can help
you arrive at a decision. Do you intend to pursue a career in music? If you
are graduating from college in two years and will put the instrument in your
closet, it may not be worth the time, trouble, and expense to replace your
clarinet now. That's something only you can judge.

Another responder recommended trying 10 different clarinets. This is excellent
advice. Take your current clarinet with you. Check the sound, the feel, the
resistance, the fit and finish. You might want to take several different reeds
with you as well.
