James.P.Reed@-----.net (James P Reed) Subject: [kl] Hymns The woman I'm
dating has asked me to play some hymns for her and I'm unsure of what's
available in the literature. I've been playing for about 18 months and
figure I ought to start out with the following books: Favorite Hymns -
Warner Favorite Hymns, Book 2 - Warner Inspirational Hymns for Clarinet -
forgot by whom Orchestrated Favorite Hymns of Praise (Bk 3 or 4 for
clarinet) - Hope Does anybody have any other suggestions I should look
into? Also, how do I go about transposing music from a regular hymnal to
play on a Bb clarinet? Thanks in advance for any advice and opinions on
this matter. Jim

---------------------

Jim, you do not need to transpose if you are playing these yourself. If you
play them with piano, or another instrument other then Clarinet, or
Trumpet, then you would have to play all notes up 1 whole step (2 half
steps) from what is written. If by yourself - just play what is written,
unless your girlfriend has perfect pitch, and is looking at your music ;)
The mother of all books to play Hymns is titled 500 Hymns for Instruments,
published by Lillenas, and the book for a solo player to get would be book
B which has the melody, and 3 other parts. Anyone who plays Hymns for more
then one instrument should see this book. I taught Woodwinds in a Christian
School for 15 years, so that is how I know of it. There are actually 514 in
the book. Cost is about $20. Easy to intermediate level.
