Personally, I have a silk cloth, and I prefer it to cotton. It is a matter
of opinion though -- the silk probably isn't as absorbant, but I think it is
more gentle when you run it through. Ultimately, it is personal preference,
and you should try it out and see which you prefer. I do not, however, see
a pressing need for you to switch from cotton.

A wood clarinet would be a great idea -- they really do allow you to produce
a better tone and you'll definitely hear a difference. As for prices --
they vary greatly from used to new, but I got my new wood Yahama
Intermediate Clarinet for around $400. It isn't that Buffet R-13 that I
someday hope to aspire to, but it's a great horn that has served me well
throughout high school and now in the college band and chamber groups. It
does show that you don't have to pay a tremendous amount of money for a
good, reliable wood clarinet.

Others on the list can probably better address your questions with
specifics, but I thought I'd throw in my two cents from the experiences I
have had.
