Here is something I have done in the past which worked really well to avoid
getting a technically brilliant candidate, but one who could not be flexible,
blend, etc.

In the Toledo Symphony we had a second bassoon position open. The person
selected would play in a woodwind quintet which annually gave 50+ concerts.

We had the finalists read some of the standard quintet literature with the
group as part of the audition, so we could ascertain pitch and tempo
sensitivity, and ability/willingness to blend.

As a result, we picked a fine bassoonist, with a lovely sound and great
technique, and who also possessed sensitivity and finesse. In a word, true
musicianship.

Incidentally, I also acquired a life-long friend, so if you are out there
Chris Marsh (Prince), hi, how are you, how's the family, and I miss playing
with you!

Walter Grabner
who is...........remembering an old friend and one hell of a bassoonist!
