Subj: [kl] Installing a thumbrest

It is very simple to install a thumb rest by drilling
new holes in the body. All you need is a 1/16" drill
bit and a hand drill or drill press. First, measure
the depth of the current hole. This can be
accomplished by inserting the drill bit into the screw
hole and marking off the bit flush with the clarinet
body. I prefer to use tape (wrapped around the bit)
because it is easier to see. Next, mark the new holes
by positioning the thumb rest to the exact position
desired. Make sure to center punch the marked holes
so the countersunk screws fit accurately in the thumb
rest holes. Lastly, drill the new hole to the proper,
pre-determined depth (via the marked drill bit).
Since the clarinet body is round, the holes have to be
drilled at an angle. Do not drill straight holes when
looking from above the clarinet body. Simply rotate
the clarinet so the marked hole is at the "top" of the
circumference and drill absolutely straight. I prefer
using a drill with variable speed, so I can drill
slowly (rpm wise) and make minute adjustments if
needed.

Tapping the new hole is not necessary. The screws
will automatically tap themselves into the 1/16"
drilled hole. If you are moderately handy, this task
is extremely simple and effective. Remember, bad hole
placement will only make the clarinet lighter! :)

BTW, the 1/16" drill bit works for the Buffet screws.
Other brands may differ in screw size.
