This thread has been a bit like watching a horror movie. (tho' actually, I don't
watch horror movies.) Having lived in Europe for over half my life after growing
up in the US, I sometimes think I have an insight into both worlds but, more and
more, I feel alienated to America.

The daily paper doesn't help. Which stories about America have been in the local
paper recently? The Swiss/Amer. 10-yr.old in Colorado who either helped his
little sister go wee-wee in the yard - or raped her. He was arrested in the
night and taken off to the cell bound on hands and feet. Swiss authorities
complained about exagerated harschness - to no avail. Or the German brothers
sentenced to death for murder. There is no death sentence in the European Union
- what if new evidence turned up? Or the Japanese exchange student who got shot
because he didn't understand the word "freeze". Or the movie star (forgot which
one - wasn't he English?) who was arrested for picking up a prostitute on the
streets of LA.

Of couse Europe also has its problems (i.e. right wing extremists, unemployment,
etc.) but the atmosphere is different. I feel more free here. (Yes, I do
sometimes touch my pupils or have them touch me for breathing. No, I don't stand
behind my pupils to finger their clarinets.) Europe is not free from incest and
child molestation but I hope that this deceitful attitude doesn't come over here
from the States like other trends have.

David
