Subj: [kl] re oboe lyre
Date: Sat, 30 Oct 1999 12:22:08 -0400

G'day all,
Just to complete the saga of the oboe player on parade....well she is now
playing oboe on parade again having bent a clarinet lyre out of shape to fit
her oboe! Where there's a will.....

The Tattoo begins this week and on top of that we're moving house the day
after it finishes.....it's very busy at the Ellem household at the moment so
I'll unsubscribe until after the move... Hope you all have a wonderful week
or 2.

God Bless.

All the best

Rod.

Subject: [donax-m] Teaching beginners [donax-m](was A simplified alien) (was, bending
notes down)

Wow, the Yes idea related below works very well with teaching beginners about
shaping oral cavity for creating a good tone in the upper and lower register.
This idea, no doubt, will create a whole new generation of clarinet
GENIUSES, who will attribute their success to YES.

<< OK, I went and tried it, and my alien isn't as extreme as I remembered.

Try saying 'yes', and then prolong the 'y', 'yyyyyyyyyyyes'. The back
of my tongue in the 'yyyyyyyyy' bit is pressed up towards the roof of my
mouth, and the air has to force its way through the narrow gap, making a
sort of hissy, buzzy 'eeeee' sound.

Now instead of the 's', alternate the yyyyyyyyy and a prolonged 'e' (but
still with the same vowel as 'e' in 'yes', not 'ee' as in 'beer') to get

'eeeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyy'
^ as in 'yes' ^ as in 'beer'

Now get rid of the vocalisation, so that in the 'yyyyyy' bit the buzzy
hiss remains, and in the 'eeeeee' it sounds just like a warm breath.

Now do the same with the clarinet, starting with the 'eeeeeee' bit
(rhyming with 'yes') as above, fingering top 'C', as before, and keeping
the embouchure firm.

It's the movement towards 'yyyyyyyy' that generates the bend downwards.
And a sixth is a bit exaggerated -- mine's more like an augmented
fourth.

If you now let your fingers drift over the holes, without closing them,
as you do it, you can 'fool' the reed into thinking that it's looking at
a longer tube, and get to an octave.
