Dear friends of Klarinet:

My name is Gabriel Blasberg, 32 years old, from Buenos Aires, Argentina,
and I am new in this list. I know you have discussed this topic many times
before, because I read a lot of messages searching the Klarinet Archives.
That helped me a lot, and I learnt about neckstraps, braces, thumbrests,
CTS, etc. (Sorry for my English!)
I have played the clarinet since I was 9, and I work for the Buenos
Aires Symphonic Band. I have a lot of problems with my hands (lack of finger
control in my right hand, collapsed fingers, bent wrists, etc) and I saw an
specialist who recommended me the "Siris Splints" (Silver Ring Splint Co.),
as a part of my treatment. I would like to know if someone know them and
what you think about it.
With kind regards, and thanks in advance,

Gabriel Blasberg

Subject: [donax-m] A simplified alien (was, bending notes down)

OK, I went and tried it, and my alien isn't as extreme as I remembered.

Try saying 'yes', and then prolong the 'y', 'yyyyyyyyyyyes'. The back
of my tongue in the 'yyyyyyyyy' bit is pressed up towards the roof of my
mouth, and the air has to force its way through the narrow gap, making a
sort of hissy, buzzy 'eeeee' sound.

Now instead of the 's', alternate the yyyyyyyyy and a prolonged 'e' (but
still with the same vowel as 'e' in 'yes', not 'ee' as in 'beer') to get

'eeeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyy'
^ as in 'yes' ^ as in 'beer'

Now get rid of the vocalisation, so that in the 'yyyyyy' bit the buzzy
hiss remains, and in the 'eeeeee' it sounds just like a warm breath.

Now do the same with the clarinet, starting with the 'eeeeeee' bit
(rhyming with 'yes') as above, fingering top 'C', as before, and keeping
the embouchure firm.

It's the movement towards 'yyyyyyyy' that generates the bend downwards.
And a sixth is a bit exaggerated -- mine's more like an augmented
fourth.

If you now let your fingers drift over the holes, without closing them,
as you do it, you can 'fool' the reed into thinking that it's looking at
a longer tube, and get to an octave.
