Well, now I see that we are a little more in agreement than I thought.
What is often called tip-to-tip usually isn't literally that. Rather, the
top of the tongue, maybe a quarter of an inch away from the tip, touches
the underside of the reed very near the tip. There can be some variation.
But, if one were inclined to take the term tip-to-tip literally, I don't
think you would "slice" your tongue. The tongue is a muscle, one of the
strongest in the body, and the reed isn't dense enough to do it much
damage.
