As a very new beginner myself, I would not like to see separate lists. I
don't often put my two cents in because of my current lack of knowledge,
but sitting back and reading the debates, whether they turn into flames
or not, not only provides interesting reading, but often produces
valuable little pieces of information as well.

Subject: RE: [donax-m] bending notes down

Your problem could be as simple as poor reed choice (which is the beginning
of so many problems on a clarinet). If your reed is unresponsive - whether
because of poor balance or inappropriate strength - you'll lose any response
as soon as you slacken your embouchure and try to drop your jaw or your
tongue. The reed just stops vibrating. You need first to be sure your
reed/mouthpiece setup is responsive.

That very well could be my problem since I have noticed that the reed will
stop vibrating at some point while I am trying to bend the note down.
However, I am not sure what sort of reed I should look for that will
enable me to coax more responsiveness out of it, as my reed seems to work
not too bad for my normal playing (I'm using a Legere 3.5, which is a bit
soft for my tastes [I've ordered a couple of 3.75's], and a Gigliotti
mouthpiece [though I don't remember which kind specifically]. I
understand that mouthpieces can vary somewhat even when they are the same
model.)

Also, someone mentioned practicing on just the mouthpiece. I have done
this also (it was mentioned in the Klarinet archives) and I was able to
get a drop of much more than a half-step, but still nowhere near an
octave. I'll keep trying and in the meantime would welcome any other
suggestions people might have.

thanks,

Matt Goff
