Glendale (California) Community College orchestra is performing Mendelssohn's
Symphony No. 5 (Reformation). The fourth movement calls for serpent &
contrabassoon. While tuba may be the conventional wisdom substitute for the
serpent, has anyone heard of substituting bass clarinet? I realize the
timbre of the bass clarinet might not be exactly what Mendelssohn wanted, but
we have an overabundance of clarinetists.
