Important point! The concept of "singing" is critical on sax, maybe even
moreso than on clarinet. I also play soprano through bari sax, but have
never gotten completely satisfied with my tenor sound, even though I really
got my sax start there. Some people suggest that tenor is simply a
different animal, and there is some evidence to support that theory.

For a beginning sax doubler, I would suggest alto first, but tenor would be
reasonable, too, especially if the clarinetist has fairly extensive
experience on bass clarinet. The size difference will be much less
daunting that way. Forget soprano. It is sort of like having a Eb
clarinet: nice to have, but you can go a long way without it. Even bari
is more useful. The only soprano I have played public has been transposed
oboe parts and once subbing on a trumpet part in a pit band (OK, but the
mute effects don't work worth a hoot!). But I have played legitimate bari
parts in pits, including the book for "Barnum" which had bass clarinet,
bari sax, and Bb clarinet. My bari is currently on loan to the fifth sax
in the big band I play in, while I play lead alto and clarinet. My soprano
sits in its case all alone.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is too loud.
