I happen to be a clarinet player who doubles on bari and alto sax. In my
opinion, it doesn't matter what the parts are, or how "close the instrument
is to clarinet". All saxophone fingerings are the same, no matter what the
horn (except for the low A on bari, and the high F# option on nicer horns),
so if you play one, you can basically play them all. I think the choice
mainly depends on what you want. If you want the sound of a bari, play
bari. Likewise with alto or tenor. As for soprano, until you are
established on saxophone, having one will do you no good at all.
