As far as similarity between the way saxes and clarinets are played, alto is
the closest match to clarinet. The blowing pattern an all saxes is
different from clarinet in small ways, but tenor is a whole different
monster.
Overall, i think your best bet would be to get an intermediate alto, and
then borrow the school's tenor when you have gotten your sax going well.

There's far to many issues to address on a clarinet list, and if you'd like
to e-mail me and discuss it further, that's fine. I'm always open to help
other aspiring doublers.

interest in flute)

Subject: [kl] Sax Advice
Date: Wed, 27 Oct 1999 19:12:14 -0500

Hello,
My name is Chris and I was wondering if there were any doublers out there
that could give some advice. I want to get into jazz, so I'll be in the
market for a sax. I keep getting conflicting advice as far as if I should
get a soprano, alto or tenor. I'm only buying one sax, since it is my
second instrument. The advice I've gotten so far that made the most sense
to me was to get a tenor, since it plays in the same key as my clarinet and
is just as common in the jazz band as alto, and I could play out of the
same jazz books and jazz charts without transposing on clarinet and sax.
Anyone else have any thoughts on this subject?

Thanks,
Chris
