Generally I have found that if a student is consistently flat it can be
attributed to either soft reeds (as some have mentioned) or an undeveloped
embouchure. Have the student play the mouthpiece alone. Aim for a high
concert C. If the student can reach the pitch, have her then play on the
full instrument, applying the same support.
