Jim,
I've read the same thing- as well as inquired as to possible toxicicity. It seems like something that would be feasible for the hobbyist if not for a big manufacturer. When I have some spare time (I'm dreaming about next summer) I want to try my hand at instrument making and I would like to use PEG to ensure that my effort doesn't decide to crackle all over the place once I'm done. From woodworking sources I've heard that it is even possible to use green wood as long as it is soaked for an adequate time. At this point I'm wondering if this is something that could eventually "wear out" from the stresses of playing....
