It would be a good idea for those who use mailers other
than the old fashioned "text mode" mail agents to make
sure they look at these diagrams in a Courier (or other
monospaced) font; otherwise, all the characters take
up some proportional space and are rendered unusable.

I don't allow GIFs or other binary type attachments on
the mailing list; if someone wants to build a simple
MIME extension and local readers to display the
fingerings, preferably in Java, have at it! It wouldn't
have to be complicated - a clarinet made up of multiple
GIFs or JPEGS showing open/closed holes could be
displayed in a Java or browser windowi using an ASCII
MIME type as a data file.

Unfortunately I don't have the time to do it, but I'd
be more than happy to distribute a java reader via
Sneezy.
