I bought an e-bay special several months ago, mainly for "art". It is a
"Schreiber & Sohne", made in Germany, with a serial number of 1431. The
wood is in great shape, but it needs new corks and pads (big deal...).
It also needs a major repair to the top joint finger rings, as the
bridge piece (going to the lower joint) has broken from the rest. It
looks like somebody dropped the top joint, and the protruding bridge
piece took the brunt of the fall. I think proper soldering and
re-alignment would do the trick. All the metal is there, the joint is
just broken where the bridge comes in to the ring stack.

My question: has anybody ever played one of these? I have heard of the
company as being good with bassoons, but I am wondering if it worth my
$$ to get this thing to be more than a sculpture. I play an R-13, but
am thinking it may make a good back-up instrument. Any comments are
appreciated (especially if anybody has an idea of what it would cost to
repair the ring mechanism).

Thanks in advance,

Dave Sandusky
