I have an old buffet A clarinet which was my father's first A. It was
built in 1901. I played it in HS and college; then it sat for a good may
years (what little playing i did in that time was done on the Bb). When i
took the horn to a tech to have pads replaced as necessary, he found that
one reason it didn't play as it ought was the presence of a crack in the
upper joint. He pinned it and it plays great now (i still don't use it,
though, since i bought a 10G...).
