Bill Hausmann asked:

<<<Also, as long as I am asking dumb questions, the A clarinet which I
recently purchased, and old C. Fischer with wrap-around octave key, is
characterized by an incredibly in-tune (even with the barrel AND mouthpiece
pulled out some) and sweet-sounding altissimo register. . . . Is this a
normal A clarinet characteristic, or am I just a very lucky eBay shopper?>>>

A couple of things.

First, Clarinets in A that I have owned (both Buffets and Yamaha Buffet
clones) have indeed seemed better in tune in the altissimo register. It
*think* that is a result of having a longer tube with the same bore--perhaps
easier to get the hole in exactly the right place. This is purely
conjecture, of course. While it's certainly not a statistically relevant
sample, my observations coincide w/ Bill's.

Second, unless I am mistaken, I believe that the clarinet that Bill bought
is in fact a Buffet, or was at least made in the Buffet factory. Didn't
Fischer "stencil" their horns?

Of course, this is all from memory (I'm still @-----.
