I don't know which list it came from, but I still have the message I was
sent when I complained about the inability to save Finale files in formats
readable by older versions. Here it is:

"1. Create an ETF file with the newer version."
"2. Open it in a text processor."
"3. Replace the first lines, up to number 19., with the same lines from
_any_ older version ETF file."
"It may be a good idea to read other Finale Forums, such as the one at
cmp.net. The above idea was originally Dan Eichenbaums."

I don't know how far back you can jump - I only used it between Finale 97
and 3.7. I have not tried it often, but the few times I did, it worked
better than saving as a .MID file, which loses all formatting and expression
marks. Things needed to be reformatted and I had some problems with text
elements (titles, page footers, etc.) because versions since 97 have treated
them very differently from versions 3.x. I'll do some experimenting between
Finale 2000 and Finale 98, which I still have on my machine. I have the
disks for versions all the way back to 2.2, but I don't expect to be
reinstalling any of them anytime soon.
