Subj: [kl] Fake books and transposing

There are Bb and Eb fake books available at any large music store and on
the internet.

Transposing is a great skill to have and it is just not that hard if you
approach it in small slices, a song at a time. Any of the Abersold
books has the same songs in C,Bb, and Eb and is a good place to start.
Clarinet is only a note away from C and it might help you to keep that
in mind, although I think that it is better to just make the association
between the note on the page and the fingering and get so that you can
do it automatically.

Incidentally, this is one place that the lucky people with perfect pitch
have difficulties - they have established a very firm connection between
the printed note and a sound (of the note on the instrument they first
learned on). For them the printed note has multiple sounds, depending
on the instrument they are playing.

Bite the bullet and good luck.

Sheldon Sper
