Buffet
Prestige RC Bb that I do most of my playing on, and an A
clarinet, which is a wonderful Leblanc L300. This instrument still
looks and plays like new but has become my nemesis. When I am doing
orchestral playing, the Leblanc is great, but I am looking at doing
a recital in a few months using the Leblanc on half the recital for
Brahms and Schumann. I can get a wonderful sound on the Leblanc, but
cannot equal the volume of sound I can on my Bb without squeaking at
the high volumes.>>

Maybe you are just trying too hard for a full sound. I cannot imagine in
Brahms (Trio or Quintet?) or the Shumann (Fantasy Pieces?) that you would
require volume as great as is often needed in orchestral playing.
Respectfully, I submit that you are just trying too hard. Relax and let the
music flow. If you want more contrast, play the softs softer!!!!!!!!!

<< I am relatively secure it is not leaking, and can
get a great orchestral sound, but when I get closer to the upper
areas of volume in solo literature for contrast, I loose the battle
over the squeaks.>>

Again, it sounds like you are overblowing, and loosing control of the
embouchure. What strength reed are you using, and on what mouthpiece???

<< There is a feeling of no resistance in playing the A Leblanc (usually the
opposite of the matched brand plight of too much resistance in the A
clarinet. Should I use a more resistant mouthpiece and reed combination, or
will this contain even more of
my volume?>>

This is a thorny question, when you have mismatched horns. I had a fairly
stuffy A once, and had a very hard time with reeds. I wanted a less resistant
reed for the A, than for the Bb. I finally, sold the A, and bought two new
horns where the resistance matches nicely. I sometimes have to look to make
sure wjich one I'm playing.

<< How can I increase the volume of the sound and control
it? I am not in a position to replace my A clarinet before my Bb,
and would like a solution for this recital, before I get another A
clarinet with a new Bb.
>>

Don't fall into the trap of trying to use two different mouthpieces. That way
lies disaster. You might have to have Bb reeds and A reeds, tho.....

Good luck!
