what works for me is knowing the scales and modes in all keys-- circles of
fourths fifths,, etc . MUch easier for me to conceptualize and extrapolate
thinking in these terms. Especially easy to transpose from the key of C using
this thought process as any sharps or flats are a tip off to veer from the
"parent" scale/mode. Learning the song and playing it in all keys will help
next time you play or improvise on the song-- a very basic improvisation
would be simply playing the melody with a couple "alterations", that is
changing a few of the notes in the melody.
