Subj: [kl] Transposing C fakebooks - HELP
Date: Mon, 18 Oct 1999 04:46:56 -0400

Klarineters,

I know this topic has been bounced before
but now it is time for some practical advice. I have
joined a "jazz workshop" group where jams are
done and everybody is playing from fakebooks in C.
There are NO fakebooks in Bb my friends and what
I have discovered to my dismay is that
I CANNOT transpose to SAVE MY LIFE!!!

I mean, if its a flat or a sharp or two, I can figure out
my key and if I know the tune already I can fake it,
but if I don't know the tune I am really up a creek!!!!

What are the quick-n-dirty tricks to transposing
in this environment? Any advice would be helpful.
For example, when transposing note-by-note rather
than just by feeling the tune in my key, when I come
across an accidental I freeze - I simply don't know what to do.
And if it's *minor* not major key then I really really don't
know what to do.

Now I know why clarinets have fallen so out of favor
in jazz circles - this transposing thing is a pain in the neck!
And no I can't invest in a C clarinet at this time either.
(Not that I really care about losing face or anything like
that at this point....)
