Rereading this post 'the morning after', it strikes me that the tone is
a little harsh towards those 'legendary' performers.

Also, I should make it clear that I am by no means an expert embellisher
or improviser myself -- I do what I can, and can only listen with
open-mouthed amazement to people like Robert Levin.

On the whole, I think less rather than more embellishment is in order in
much of Mozart's music. The octet I was talking about is distinctly
second-rate music, and there was little risk of spoiling anything
profound.
