Maybe M. Kloc will respond to this one. I would think that they would
have a stock of upper joints without keys and that they would move the
keys to the new joint. I think I remember something about putting the
instrument serial number on the upper joint also.

Yes - typically, the top joints, and sometimes the bell are carved from a
solid billet, and the pieces are holed and keyed so that they conform as
they did when they were a single billet. However, I don't know what
happens when they replace a joint. Perhaps they retain the one good joint
from a clarinet with a defective joint and use those for cases such as
yours.

In my case, I don't have to worry because I play a particle board
clarinet. ^_^
